Didier Drogba scores 2 goals in Dakar and drives Senegalese fans to despondency, M. Frindéthié

In a game that was mostly dominated by Senegal, it is yet the much-feared Ivorian team that comes out triumphant. By scoring 2 goals (51st minute and 70th minute) against the Lions of Senegal at Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, Ivorian soccer sensation Didier Drogba drives the last nail in the coffin of Senegal’s hope of appearing at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, causing the stadium to erupt in pandemonium. When despondent Senegalese fans set fire in the stand and start throwing projectiles at Cote d’Ivoire’s supporters and players, the referee sees no other option but to stop the game in the 72nd minute. Earlier, in solidarity with their supporters, Drogba and his teammates had refused to board two SUVs brought on the field to rescue the orange team.  A few hours after the game was stopped, amidst rumors of assaulted Ivorian supporters, the Senegalese minister of the interior, Mbaye Ndiaye, appeared on TV to reassure the Ivorian authorities and populations in the hope of squelching any general retaliatory actions against the Senegalese that live in Cote d’Ivoire. For many Senegalese, this incident is a stain on the reputation of a country that prides itself for its teranga (tradition of hospitality).
